Pierre Labatut, also known as Pedro Labatut (Cannes 1776 - Salvador 1849) was a French mercenary who fought in the Brazilian War of Independence.
Labatut served in Europe during the Peninsular War, was later in Colombia, alongside Simon Bolivar, who is not well understood. Went to the West Indies and then to the French Guiana.
He came to the Brazil, where the Rio de Janeiro, was hired and accepted the service of Prince Regent Peter to July 3 in 1822, the rank of brigadier general, because of shortage of officers in the newly organized army.
He organized the Army called Peacemaker, name probably suggested by the Minister of Foreign Affairs and the United José Bonifácio de Andrada. He followed with his troops for the Bahia, the squadron commanded by Division Chief Rodrigo de Lamare, consisting of a Frigate, two Corvette, two brigs, with a mission to face the Portuguese general Inácio Luís Madeira de Melo, and there entrenched in defiance of the Regent. He won the Portuguese in the Battle of Pirajá.
Also fought in the War of the Farrapos against David Canabarro, his battalion arrived in Passo Fundo wiped out in September 1840.
Peter Labatut received in his lifetime the title of Marechal-de-campo. He left active service in 1842 and died in the ancient streets of Salvador Barris, via which had renamed the street Labatut General.
